THE PROYECT

- Dunoon was the city, which represented United Kingdom in the Belgian City Libramont- Europe 1992. People responsible for the Scottish delegation together with people from Dunoon and its surroundings decided to hold and co-ordinate a similar event to the one we lived in Libramont. They shaped the Cowal-Europe Association presided by the Duke of Argyll and Count of Cowal, and they invited to take part in the occasion the organisations and associations who were in Belgium.

- The aim of the project was to widen the knowledge; tolerance, mutual respect, solidarity and friendship, among the people from the twelve small and medium sized towns belonging to every European Union Country in 1992.

- The people from Dunoon were our hosts and they assumed the celebration costs. Every one of the other teams paid for the charges of their journey to Scotland and their own other materials. Participants stayed during those days in Dunoon´s people’s homes, as well as hostels, schools and nearby campsites. Such as Toward Scholl, counting its green lawn sports grounds and beautiful views to the sea.

- Different competitions were held at open-air or covered venues, such as the Queens Halle, a multifunctional cosy building which also serves for social events; the municipal swimming pool or the modern equipment from the previous American Camp.

- Scottish media closely followed preparations of the European Festival. Scottish TV broadcast several reports about Cowal- Europe showing the project and presenting guest teams hometowns.

THE SCHEDULE

- Dates were from 31st July to 7th August 1993. After the 1st of August Opening Ceremony, seminars and exchanging trades followed during the whole week. The Scottish Industrial Development Agency and the Strathclyde Regional Council Group directed them.

- Another point of interest was the trade Fair. A stall with products from every hometown was the right place to distribute brochures, maps, books and other tourist documentation. A British Supermarket Chain "Presto" made possible the sale of products from different countries.
- During the evenings, before the night entertaining, every representing group performed; they were folk dancing and musical groups from every hometown.
- Sports were a basic component of the Festival. Competitions were swimming, volleyball, football, basketball, petanque, badminton, squash, fishing, mountain cycling and running. A final score gave the tournament winner.
- Something new was the food exhibition. Every country was on charge of a dinning room and a kitchen where local typical dishes were developed. During the event days, people who wished it could taste typical food from the 12 towns taking part
- It was a festival where cordiality respect and fair play overcame borders and language boundaries. A celebration in which people from Dunoon, besides the organisational effort, were determined to show us their town their countryside their way of life....
- They revealed their hospitality, reflected in the sentence:

"Ceud mille failte"

Gaelic which means, "we welcome you thousands of times".
